What is Adobe Acrobat?
Adobe Acrobat is a popular and powerful suite of PDF tools that lets users create, edit, share, and secure digital documents with ease.
The free version, Acrobat Reader, allows users to view, print, share, and comment on PDFs. For more advanced needs, Acrobat Standard adds capabilities like editing text and images, signing, converting documents to and from PDF, and protecting documents with passwords. Acrobat Pro takes it even further with professional-grade features such as editable, searchable PDFs, redaction tools, creating webforms, and more. Together, these editions make Adobe Acrobat the industry standard for managing PDFs efficiently and securely. Acrobat Studio has all of this, plus an AI Assistant.
Adobe Acrobat Lifecycle
Acrobat has recently moved away from perpetual licenses in favor of subscription-based services. Earlier versions, such as Acrobat 2017 and 2020, were sold as one-time purchases, now known as the Classic Track, and received only limited updates and support for a set number of years. These perpetual editions will soon reach end of support, meaning no further security or feature updates are provided. One non-subscription version of Acrobat remains in Acrobat Pro 2024 desktop software, which offers a one-time, upfront purchase that provides three years of access to Acrobat desktop.
The new subscription versions, known as Acrobat “DC” (Document Cloud) operate on a Continuous Track, meaning they receive updates, new features, and security patches automatically on a regular basis. This ensures that users always have the latest tools without needing to repurchase the software.
