Currently headquartered in Palo Alto, California, the company was founded in 1998 by Diane Green, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, Ellen Wang, and Edouard Bugnion.
Their software including the desktop software is designed to run on computers installed with Microsoft Windows, macOS or Linux. On the other hand, their enterprise software called the VMware ESXi is made for servers and runs on server hardware directly without an underlying OS.
