Headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, Sonos Inc. is an American consumer electronics company that designs and manufactures smart speakers and other audio-related devices. The company was founded by John McFarlane, Craig Shelburne, Tom Cullen, and Trung Mai in 2002 to start a wireless service.

However, McFarlane created a music system prototype called the Digital Music System in 2002, which became the main area of expertise for the company. After adding mesh networking, AES encryption, and other innovative additions to their products, Sonos released various types of speakers and related services. Currently, the company has a worldwide distribution network managed through 12 local and international offices.
