Microsoft’s project management tools Project 2013 and Project Server 2013 will be going end of life on the 11th of April 2023. We recommend that you update all installations within your organization to keep receiving security updates, patches, and technical support from Microsoft.

What are Microsoft Project and Project Server?

Microsoft Project is a project management software that helps you plan, track, and manage projects effectively. It provides a range of tools and features for project managers to create and manage tasks, allocate resources, track progress, and analyze performance. It also offers collaboration features that enable team members to communicate and share information in real time.

Microsoft Project Server extends on Project’s capabilities to take it to the enterprise level. It offers centralized management of projects, resources, and portfolios across your organization. It allows multiple users to access, collaborate, and manage projects simultaneously.

Microsoft Project Lifecycle

Once Project 2013 goes end of life, there will be 3 more supported on-prem versions of Project and Project Server: 2016, 2019, and 2021.

All versions of Project and Project Server up to and including the 2019 versions follow Microsoft’s fixed lifecycle policy of 10 years. In the first 5 years, the products receive mainstream support including feature updates, platform updates, security updates, and functionality fixes. The second 5-year cycle is Extended support which only includes security updates.

Project 2021 follows the modern lifecycle policy. This means it receives continuous service and support as long as you are licensed. It is also up to you to make sure you are meeting the servicing and system requirements.
